Every winter Show Me Shortline hosts presenter Bernard Adam from Tubeline Manufacturing in Elmira, Ontario Canada-who has 25 years experience with wrapping hay and haylage in general- to speak about cutting and wrapping hay, and the various hay wrapping machines that Show Me Shortline offers to dealers and customers. During the next several months we will be blogging about various tips and solutions to help you active the wrapped hay that you want this coming year. So keep looking back for our posts about hay wrapping.
The first how and whyӔ in hay wrapping we want to talk about is simply when and how to cut hay. We suggest cutting grass when it is in the vegetative stage of growth, this is before the heads are out and it has begun to sprout, as shown in the picture above. If you harvest during this stage it assures four things: optimum feed value, great resale value, time to do one or two extra crops and more money and a relaxing season will be had. Doing this, your next crop you could cut and wrap would be in about 28 days, whereas if you harvest in the reproductive stage, when the grass has begun to sprout you are looking at about 42 days between cuts. Harvesting in the reproductive stage means that your feed value will be at a minimum, your herd will get what they need to survive, not grow, and you will spend money and work harder. Tubeline makes both in line bale wrapping machines and a single Balewrapper. We have in line bale wrappers which will wrap square or round bales, and a 3pt hitch single Balewrapper that will wrap up to 5ft diameter bales quickly and efficiently. Tubeline is the brand name you want if you want the leading technology about why and how to wrap hay efficiently and with knowledgeable staff behind you to assist in making your experience smooth and to meet the needs of your farming operation.
